Holiday Cheer!

b8fdb4888c1b2da6cf783b8a688a993aMy Christmas season does not really get into full swing until I’ve had my first sip of eggnog. Which happened on Friday at our office party. Which got me thinking: different people celebrate with different beverages. And if we are all not careful, all of this celebrating could lead to a lot of extra calories resulting in weight gain to start out 2014 trying to get rid of. So here are some helpful suggestions to navigate the holiday party bar.

THINK YOUR DRINK. Is it really worth the calories? Are you afraid of being the odd man out? Do you feel pressured by the people you are celebrating with? Just hold a tall glass of ice plus a mixer plus a twist of lime and no one will be the wiser. And you just saved 300-650 calories per drink.

LIGHTEN UP. Order your favorite cocktail with a zero calorie mixer instead. Or do as the Europeans and mix half wine with half club soda for all the fizz and half the calories.

STRETCH IT OUT. If you plan to have several drinks over a several hour long party, alternate alcohol with plain water or other NA beverage.

BE SAFE. Whatever your drink of choice, be sure to leave your car keys with a designated driver. Many cities offer free cab service during the holiday season just to keep impaired drivers off the roads. Be sure to check out your options before you head out of your door for the evening.
